The award was presented to the project's master plan developer, Irvine-based SunCal Companies, during an awards ceremony held February 19th at The Sutton Place Hotel Sutton Place Hotel is a collection of luxury hotels located in Canada and United States, owned and managed by The Sutton Place Grande Hotels Group with office in Vancouver, BC.

"Amerige Heights is an impressive achievement in civil engineering that illustrates the possibilities of our profession," said Randall Berry, P.E., immediate past president of ASCE's Orange County Branch and a member of the panel that judged this year's awards. "SunCal's vision and commitment helped transform an outdated and austere site into a thriving mixed-use community."

The result of more than 10 years of planning and development, Amerige Heights is situated on 275 acres and offers a variety of housing options and opportunities for recreation, shopping and employment. The development includes approximately 1,150 residential units (single family and attached homes), 300 for-rent apartment units, 500,000 square feet of retail stores and shops, 200,000 square feet of commercial business space, 25 acres of parks and two schools.

"We are honored to be named best project of the year by our peers in a region with so many innovative developments," said Bruce Elieff, SunCal's president. "In addition to the world class team of planners, engineers, architects, homebuilders and other experts who helped make Amerige Heights a reality, we want to share this award with the City of Fullerton. Without the City's bold and forward thinking, this project would not have been possible."

Among the many project attributes that led to their selection of Amerige Heights, the judges cited SunCal's assembly of a unified development team that was uniquely adept at building consensus for the project in the local community. The result is a highly desirable mixed-use project eagerly accepted by both homebuyers and local business owners.

The ASCE Project of the Year award is not the first honor bestowed on Amerige Heights. In 2001 it received the Planning Project Award from the Orange County Section of the American Planning Association The American Planning Association (APA) is a professional organization representing the field of city and regional planning in the United States. The APA was formed in 1978 when two separate professional planning organizations, the American Institute of Planners and the American  (APA (All Points Addressable) Refers to an array (bitmapped screen, matrix, etc.) in which all bits or cells can be individually manipulated.

The Amerige Heights site and surrounding land was previously owned by The Hughes Aircraft Hughes Aircraft Company was a major aerospace and defense company founded by Howard Hughes. The group was based near Ballona Creek, in Culver City, California, USA, on the Pacific Coast.

Company, which used it for a defense research and testing facility. The site was chosen by Howard Hughes himself as an ideal "remote" location. Hughes Aircraft and its successor, The Raytheon Corporation, continued to utilize it as a cold war-era defense research and manufacturing plant for advanced radar systems. To this day, approximately 800 Raytheon employees continue to develop radar and highway toll systems in a facility situated on a small portion of the original Hughes Aircraft site.

The cost of Amerige Heights grading and infrastructure alone exceeded $80 million. More than two million square feet of concrete and steel buildings (many designed to be blast-resistant) had to be demolished de·mol·ish
