Americans living in poverty increased by 1.3 million in 2003.

 reported in August that the number of Americans living in poverty increased by 1.3 million in 2003, totaling 35.8 million nationwide (12.5 percent of the entire population). It further noted that 45 million Americans now have no health insurance.
