The survey, conducted by Honeywell Automation and Control Solutions (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :HON), found that nine out of 10 homeowners travel for pleasure and nearly half (47%) travel for business. And sizeable percentages (44% and 19%, respectively) of those who travel for pleasure or business are away from home 10 or more days a year. So who's watching their homes when Americans leave for a few days? Four out of five (81%) say their homes are watched over by neighbors, relatives or friends. Four out of five (81%) lock the doors. According to the Honeywell survey, other steps taken before leaving home include: Adjust the thermostat thermostat, automatic device that regulates temperature in an enclosed area by controlling heating or refrigerating systems. Interest in home control The survey also revealed that Americans are interested in products to help out on the home front while they are away. -- Alert me. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of homeowners like the idea of being alerted to plumbing, electrical, heating or other home-system failures when they are away. -- Save on home heating/cooling bills. More than 60% report interest in products that would help save energy on their heating and cooling bills when they are away. -- Call-ahead comfort. Forty-six percent report interest in using the phone to adjust their home's temperature to a comfortable setting before they arrive home.
