Despite wide variances in the quality of handwritten records, Baker, a descendant of a veteran of the War of 1812, has faithfully transcribed the records kept of American prisoners of war in that conflict. Working from microfilmed copies of roster books of the British Admiralty kept in the Public Records Office of the UK, he includes prisoners held in Bermuda, the Cape of Good Hope, and Jamaica, with alphabetical listings by name, numeric listings by prisoner number, and crew listings by American and British ship. He also includes those whose service affiliation was not known, US Marines, and those who died as prisoners. Baker has provided an invaluable service to researchers and genealogists (he warns that some names are probably spelled phonetically).
