The American Moral & Sentimental Magazine, which was published between July 1797 and May 1998, took on the burden of improving the hearts of "the young and rising generation" through moral and religious essays, and occasional sentimental poems and articles. To make this material accessible to the modern reader, this catalog catalog, descriptive list, on cards or in a book, of the contents of a library. Assurbanipal's library at Nineveh was cataloged on shelves of slate. The first known subject catalog was compiled by Callimachus at the Alexandrian Library in the 3d cent. B.C.  indexes the articles by subject, title and initial wording or first line and author. Prose and poetry are indexed separately. The volume also includes a register of the contents and an index of sources.
