"WAGES is a serious initiative that addresses a critical social issue for Dade County," said Peter J. Dolara, American's senior vice president for Miami, the Caribbean and Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies. .

"About 25 percent of the state's welfare recipients are located in this community," he said, "and, as Mayor Penelas has pointed out, it is vitally important that the private and public sector work together to assist welfare recipients in becoming productive members of society."

"American is pleased that it can support this effort with meaningful jobs, which can foster self-reliance and dignity and lead to even better things for individuals in the future," Dolara said. "We hope that American's commitment will serve as an example to encourage other employers to support WAGES with jobs of their own."

Florida established the WAGES program in October 1996 as the state's response to sweeping welfare reform that President Clinton signed into law last August. The program seeks to move welfare recipients into the mainstream workforce by requiring them to work, or enter some form of vocational training, within a two-year period. They must be self-sufficient when the period ends.
