American Water Works Company, Inc. Adds New Vice President of Corporate Development.

VOORHEES, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 6, 2000

American Water Works Company (NYSE:AWK) President and Chief Executive Officer J. James Barr announced today that Mr. Stephen F. Gorden has joined the company as vice president of corporate development.

Gorden comes to American Water Works with some 30 years of experience in the water utility industry. Since 1994, he has served as director of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, the third largest water and sewerage utility in the United States.

"Steve will work closely with the senior leadership team at American Water Works to create business opportunities that represent the prospect of added value for our shareholders," said Mr. Barr. From 1980 to 1994, Gorden was director of operations for the Portland (Maine) Water District and served in numerous positions in the Portland Water District prior to that.

He recently completed a term as president of the American Water Works Association, has testified before the U.S. Congress on numerous issues important to the water industry, served as past chair of the National Water Utility Council and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Water Works Association Research Foundation.
