American Superconductor names Richard J. Gran director of Power Engineering; Industry veteran to lead power engineering developments.WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 1995--American Superconductor A material that has little resistance to the flow of electricity. Traditional superconductors operate at absolute zero (-459.67 degrees Fahrenheit or -273.15 degrees Celsius). Experiments in the 1980s raised the temperature to -321 degrees Fahrenheit. Corp. Gran to the new position of director of Power Engineering. Dr. Gran will direct all aspects of American Superconductor's power engineering activities, which involve the application of high temperature superconductors (HTS HTS Heights HTS Harmonized Tariff System HTS High Throughput Screening (biomolecular assay screening) HTS High-Throughput Screening (Pharmaceutical Industry) HTS Harmonized Tariff Schedule ) and other advanced technologies to the design and manufacture of systems for managing electric power. Dr. Gran's responsibilities include the 1997 launch of ASC's first significant commercial product, a line of cryogenic power converters called CryoPower(TM). Power converters are used for the conversion and control of electric power in many electrical applications, including all motor drives, metal and chemical processing equipment, electric trains and power quality equipment. CryoPower devices integrate HTS inductor inductor, electric device consisting of one or more turns of wire and typically having two terminals. An inductor is usually connected into a circuit in order to raise the inductance to a desired value. coils with cryocooled power semiconductors to produce more efficient, compact and cost-effective power converters. Because of significant improvements in performance compared with conventional technology, CryoPower equipment is expected to accelerate the growth of the existing $200 million annual market for power converters. Greg Yurek, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. of American Superconductor, said that Dr. Gran's experience and expertise will be instrumental in rolling out additional commercial products scheduled to follow the introduction of CryoPower. "Power engineering is a core competency at ASC ASC Ambulatory surgery center, see there because it is a key factor in many of our HTS-based products, including current limiters and superconducting magnetic energy storage Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) systems store energy in the magnetic field created by the flow of direct current in a superconducting coil which has been cryogenically cooled to a temperature below its superconducting critical temperature. as well as the CryoPower line," Yurek said. "In addition to his wealth of knowledge and talent, Dr. Gran has the management skills required to reinforce our leadership in the rapidly evolving HTS industry." Dr. Gran is joining American Superconductor after 33 years with Grumman Corp. including eight years as the director of Advanced Concepts, where he was responsible for formulating Grumman's Technology Strategic Plan and for defining the technology thrusts and strategic direction for new products and concepts. He recently was director for Transportation Programs at Grumman where he was responsible for developing a new magnetically levitated (Maglev) train concept that uses high temperature superconducting magnets. Dr. Gran received his Ph.D. in Systems Science from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. American Superconductor Corp. is dedicated to the development of commercially viable applications of high temperature superconducting technology. The company creates and develops material and manufacturing processes for making flexible high temperature ceramic superconducting wires, wire products and systems.
