American Spaceframe Fabricators, LLC Awarded Weather Enclosure Fabrication Contract by Fluor Hanford.CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. -- American Spaceframe Fabricators, LLC (Logical Link Control) See "LANs" under data link protocol. LLC - Logical Link Control (ASFI ASFI Army Single Face to Industry ASFI Accès Sans Fil à Internet (French: wireless internet access) ASFI American Spaceframe Fabricators International ASFI Association Suisse des Femmes Ingénieures ) today announced it has been awarded a contract by Fluor Hanford to fabricate a weather enclosure for the transuranic trans·u·ran·ic also trans·u·ra·ni·um adj. Having an atomic number greater than 92. [trans- + uran(ium) + -ic. (TRU TRU True TRU Thompson Rivers University (Canada) TRU Toys R Us TRU Transuranic TRU Teenage Research Unlimited TRU The Root Underground (gaming clan) TRU Transuranium TRU Transformer Rectifier Unit ) Waste Retrieval Project at the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. Workers on the project are retrieving the equivalent of 75,000 drums of radioactive waste from burial trenches. ASFI was awarded the project due to the company's ability to accommodate unique design specifications that required a portable, durable weather enclosure to withstand the elements. Fluor Hanford will install the enclosure over a burial trench in fall 2006 to protect workers from the weather as they retrieve the drums of waste. ASFI designed the structure on wheels, meeting a key need to move the enclosure along the length of a trench as drums of waste are retrieved. The enclosure will be transportable between trenches as the cleanup work progresses. ASFI designed a similar mobile building for the Shattuck Superfund site in Denver Colorado. "The Shattuck Chemical Superfund Site required the removal of approximately 310,000 cubic yards of toxic soil under tight air quality requirements with excellent results. It provided a superb foundation for the TRU Retrieval Project," said Chris Longley, vice president of business development for ASFI. The company's consistent "out-of-the-box" design engineering and receptivity to the specific needs of Fluor Hanford and the U.S. Department of Energy contributed to ASFI's being awarded the contract. In October 2003, Fluor Hanford began retrieving drums and boxes of waste from the trenches in Hanford's low-level burial grounds. The waste is in the form of contaminated debris, tools, clothing, and other materials generated in the 1970s and 1980s. The waste containers were stacked on asphalt pads, covered with plywood, draped with tarps, and then covered with dirt. Once the drums are retrieved, workers determine whether they contain low-level radioactive waste Noun 1. low-level radioactive waste - (medicine) radioactive waste consisting of objects that have been briefly exposed to radioactivity (as in certain medical tests) , which can be disposed of in a lined, permitted facility on the Hanford Site, or transuranic waste, which is then prepared for shipment to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, or WIPP, is the world's first underground repository licensed to safely and permanently dispose of transuranic radioactive waste that is left from the research and production of nuclear weapons.
