The American Society of Breast Surgeons today announced that it has established the largest compilation of data on the use of partial breast irradiation to treat breast cancer, through the MammoSite Patient Registry. The Registry is a national data collection program designed to gather and analyze patient information on the use, complications and outcomes in patients treated with MammoSite. The MammoSite catheter catheter /cath·e·ter/ (kath´e-ter)

is the most widely-used method to deliver partial breast irradiation for treatment of breast cancer. A review of data on the first 1,000 patients in the registry has begun and preliminary data will be presented this week at the 5th Annual Meeting of the nation's leading organization of surgeons who treat patients with breast disease.

The American Society of Breast Surgeons assumed responsibility for the MammoSite patient registry in November of 2003. Since then, the Society has successfully achieved its goal of transitioning the registry management and data collection and has begun the process of analysis. With information from 1,000 patient outcomes now catalogued, this registry represents the largest accumulation of data on partial breast irradiation to date.

"We feel it is a tremendous accomplishment that the Society has been able to collect information on so many patients that have been treated with partial breast irradiation utilizing the MammoSite catheter. This registry will provide a wealth of data for years to come" said Dr. Peter Beitsch, director of the Dallas Breast Center and co-Principal Investigator on the MammoSite registry. "The information obtained from these patients will help surgeons determine which patients will benefit from MammoSite, how best to insert and use the device, and will hopefully improve access to breast conservation treatment options for patients who may not be able to get 6-7 weeks of radiation therapy."
