Its resorts included Sunday River and Sugarloaf/USA in Maine and The Canyons in Utah. , has reached an agreement with Kamori International Corp. to acquire the Steamboat Ski Resort The Steamboat Ski Resort is a ski area operated by the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. It is located in Routt National Forest on Mount Werner, a mountain in the Park Range. The ski area has 165 named trails spread over 2965 acres. in Steamboat Springs CO and Heavenly Ski Resort Heavenly Mountain Resort is a ski resort located on the California-Nevada border in South Lake Tahoe ( 38°56'7.40"N, 119°56'24.29"W). It has 95 runs and 30 lifts that are spread between California and Nevada and four base facilities. The resort was purchased by Vail Resorts, Inc. , which straddles the California/Nevada state line near Lake Tahoe, for $288.3 million. Other terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. The acquisition is expected to close in October of this year. American Skiing chairman Leslie B. Otten said "This is a big day for us. These are world-class resorts, and Kamori International has done a superb job of managing them. There has been a lot of interest in the resorts from other parties, and we're honored to have been selected." At closure, the American Skiing group of companies will own and operate eleven ski resorts, with at least one resort located in each major skiing market across the United States. Combined, the resorts generated approximately 4.9 million skier and snowboarder visits in the 1996-1997 ski season, which is in excess of 9 percent of the 1996-1997 US skier market. American Skiing is at the forefront of the consolidation trend in the ski industry. The deal will solidify American Skiing's status as one of the largest alpine resort operators and developers in the world.
