Presidential Citation recipients are selected each year by the APA president and are generally awarded the citation in recognition of contributions to the science and practice of psychology, efforts to improve and expand mental health services, and efforts to promote human welfare.

Ferrero was recognized for his ongoing efforts to create partnerships between the communities served and the academic activities of the university and for establishing linkages that provide a scientific perspective to understanding and developing effective solutions to human problems. He was also honored for acknowledging the importance of a psychological perspective in resolving complex social problems and for establishing and maintaining the shared South Florida resource of a comprehensive Community Mental Health Center.
