Authors Bird and Sherwin spent 25 years poring through thousands of letters and records--including massive FBI files--and conducting nearly 100 interviews with friends, relatives, and colleagues of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The effort has produced the most comprehensive biography to date of the scientist sometimes known as the father of the atomic bomb atomic bomb or A-bomb, weapon deriving its explosive force from the release of atomic energy through the fission (splitting) of heavy nuclei (see nuclear energy).
