Mr. Whelan has over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, including 14 years with Gulf Oil Corporation. During that time he gained international experience in Northeastern British Columbia British Columbia, province (2001 pop. 3,907,738), 366,255 sq mi (948,600 sq km), including 6,976 sq mi (18,068 sq km) of water surface, W Canada. Mr. Whelan acts as a consultant to development companies with natural resource holdings in oil, gas, and minerals. His responsibilities include: economic evaluations of properties; research and development of projects which have economic potential; evaluation of projects and their requirements for capital; economic analysis of resource properties and co-ordination of acquisition, development and production for resource properties; and assessment reports and property evaluations for petroleum companies on resource properties. The geographical areas of operations and research include North America, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Ghana, Kazakhstan, and China.

Mr. Whelan was responsible for designing the first computer program to facilitate tracking of directionally drilled wells and translating the information to plan and section maps.
