by Jack Sweetman Sweetman (Irish: Suatman or Swetman) is an Irish surname derived from the Old English bynames of Swet, Sweta and Swete which are derived from the word 'Swete' (meaning 'popular') and survived into the medieval period, being later gaelicised to 'Suatman'.
