American Megatrends releases dual Pentium Pro Merlin DP Motherboard.

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 5, 1996--

Merlin DP receives highest BAPCo SYSmark ever for Pentium Pro-based motherboard

American Megatrends Inc. (AMI) today unveiled and released the next generation of its award-winning Merlin series, the Merlin DP 180/200 MHz Dual Pentium(R) Pro Motherboard featuring DMI (Desktop Management Interface) The first desktop management standard from the DMTF. Enabling PCs to be monitored from a central console, it was superseded by the DMTF's Common Information Model (see CIM).  Wizard and USB USB

 support.

The Merlin DP received the highest BAPCo SYSmark ever for a Pentium Pro-based motherboard clocking in at a lightning-fast 718.

Pentium Pro Motherboard adds to AMI's expanding line of high-end, American-made motherboards. The Merlin DP design consists of a compact, Baby AT-sized board and the ability to utilize either one or two Pentium Pro processors with up to 512 KB built-in cache. Merlin DP is engineered to handle up to 512 MB of on-board memory. With four PCI slots and three ISA (1) (Instruction Set Architecture) See instruction set.

slots, this motherboard provides ample room for add-on cards.

As an additional feature, Merlin DP offers full USB support, and a programmable optional ROM socket to give unprecedented expandability and flexibility. An overheat alarm helps to prevent heat damage to the motherboard or CPU CPU

, while its watchdog timer automatically reboots the system when it hangs. A voltage regulator module A voltage regulator module or VRM, sometimes called PPM (power processing module) is an electronic device that provides a microprocessor the appropriate supply voltage. It can be soldered to the motherboard or be an installable device.  ensures Merlin's support for higher-speed Pentium Pro processors well into the future.

The original Merlin motherboard received PC Magazine's Editor's Choice award onboard the STA Pro 200 Desktop. PC Magazine called the system "... a performance powerhouse. It runs on an AMI motherboard (Merlin PCI), featuring Intel's Natoma chipset and EDO DRAM." The review further indicated, "Components such as the AMI Merlin motherboard using Intel's Natoma chipset (which supports EDO DRAM and error-correction parity memory) helped the unit post some of this roundup's highest scores on our Adobe Photoshop tests."

"Aside from its robust features, Merlin DP offers OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  and device manufacturers a low-cost alternative compared to the full-sized AT motherboards, in addition to providing Pentium Pro processors," Director of Sales Scott Magnes stated. "We intend to take Fall Comdex by storm and Merlin DP is one of our premier feature selections."

The Merlin DP motherboard contains additional features including speaker port, clock/calendar, hardware reset port and keyboard lock with a resettable, UL-rated fuse in its keyboard circuit. The 32 KB optional ROM socket provides flexible control support, control during BIOS boot time or control passed from the booted OS. ROM socket support is offered through flash or EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM) A rewritable memory chip that holds its content without power. Although EEPROMs spawned flash memory, EEPROMs are byte addressable at the write level, whereas flash chips must erase a block of bytes before rewriting. . While Merlin is Plug and Play ready, its AMIBIOS AMIBIOS American Megatrends, Incorporated, Basic Input/Output System  automatically configures the computer's hard drives, disk drives, processors, chipsets, memory and boot-up of the operating system.

Also unique to Merlin DP is the DMI Wizard 95, a Windows 95 DMI browser that will allow users to view and edit DMI properties in DMI-aware systems. The browser offers a user-friendly interface that locates all hardware and software components and lets the user view settings easily and efficiently.

American Megatrends will feature Merlin DP and its latest advances in motherboard technology at Fall Comdex 96 in booth L4020. For additional information, AMI can be reached at 800/828-9264 or 770/246-8600 and on the World Wide Web at http://www.megatrends.com.
