American Megatrends Partners with JMR's Fortra Enclosure for the MegaRAID Explorer 500.

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 1999--

American Megatrends:

Editorial Summary

-- JMR's unit holds up to two half-height Explorer 500 RAID

controllers and allows the user to take advantage of the Explorer

500's high performance in a small form factor.

-- The Explorer 500's 3.5" form factor makes it the most

cost-effective external RAID controller on the market.

American Megatrends Inc. (AMI), the leader in supplying RAID technology to the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  server and storage marketplace, today announced the availability of JMR's MegaRAID(R) compatible Fortra(TM) enclosure with its MegaRAID(R) Explorer 500 Fibre-to-LVD external RAID controller.

to open additional channels for both companies and are very pleased to launch the newest addition to our Fortra(TM) product line," said Steve Katz, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for JMR. "The combination of the Fortra(TM) and MegaRAID(R) Explorer 500 provides excellent performance and an attractive, fault-tolerant enclosure to provide users with a great cost-performance ratio."

JMR's new "turnkey" RAID enclosure fully supports AMI's Explorer 500 controller. JMR's unit holds up to two half-height RAID controllers and allows the user to take advantage of the Explorer 500's high performance in a small form factor. Additional features include dual AC inlets for separate power sources and three redundant hot-swappable (N+I) power supplies to ensure system uptime. The product is internationally compliant for product safety and EMC (1) (EMC Corporation, Hopkinton, MA, www.emc.com) The leading supplier of storage products for midrange computers and mainframes. Founded in 1979 by Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino, EMC has developed advanced storage and retrieval technologies for the world's largest companies. .

The new JMR model numbers for its enclosure are FR10-L21-2SAI, FR10-L22-2SA1, FT10-L21-2SAI and FT10-L22-2SA1. These are all fault-tolerant, high-availability RAID subsystem enclosures. Each support ten 3.5" HH or LP LVD See LVDS.

channels for host connection and two Ultra2 LVD SCSI channels to the drives, making it the most cost-effective external RAID controller on the market. The OS independent external RAID controller for flexible storage subsystems also includes configurable cache support using up to 128 MB ECC (1) (Error-Correcting Code) A type of memory that corrects errors on the fly. The Explorer 500 can be easily installed into Fortra(TM)'s removable, warm-pluggable canister that creates the host and drive channel interfaces. The Fortra(TM)'s other features include redundant power and cooling, a SAF-TE SAF-TE SCSI Access Fault-Tolerant Enclosure  controller and interface, 10 fully shielded metal canisters with a cam-action insertion mechanism, bi-color lightpipes for optical drive and enclosure condition status. It also includes SCSI expansion ports to chain to additional storage, interchangeable FRUs between the rackmount and tower products, an off-the-shelf tower conversion kit, a complete accessory pack and rackmounting kit with all hardware and a reusable ISTA-tested and certified shipping container.

"With multiple hardware configurations, including canister and back-plane versions, the Explorer 500 offers easy and flexible integration into a storage subsystem," said Siamak Iranpour, AMI's MegaRAID(R) Product Manager. "The Explorer 500 will serve as the foundation in providing SAN-ready solutions to the storage industry."

and daughter card approach within JMR's industry-standard canister enclosure positions it as the industry's easiest and most flexible external controller for integration into a storage environment. By utilizing Ultra2 SCSI and fibre channel technologies together, AMI's external controller is the ideal solution for OEMs and integrators to develop flexible, cost-effective SAN strategies.

The Explorer 500 offers unmatched fault tolerant features such as an on-board battery backup module for cache memory, providing up to 72 hours of data retention. Powerful management and configuration utilities, combined with high performance throughput and advanced 64-bit memory architecture make the Explorer 500 a competitive leader in the market today. Other advanced features include automatic detection of failed drives, automatic and transparent rebuild of hot spare drives, configuration on disk (COD) and hot swapping of new drives without bringing the system down. As the industry's most reliable manufacturer of RAID technology, AMI designed the Explorer 500 around the technology that is part of over 500,000 MegaRAID controllers in the field today.
