American Megatrends Announces New MegaRAID Cluster Enabler Bus Extender.

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 5, 1998--American Megatrends announced today the immediate availability of the MegaRAID Cluster Enabler Bus Extender (1) A board that pushes a printed circuit board out of the way of surrounding boards for testing purposes. It plugs into an expansion slot, and the expansion board plugs into the bus extender.

(2) A device that extends the physical distance of a bus. See repeater.

cable lengths up to 20 meters.

The MegaRAID Cluster Enabler Bus Extender enables a SCSI cable extension beyond legacy lengths while maintaining signal integrity during data transfers. This expansion is made possible by electrically isolating both the external and internal SCSI bus, thereby allowing for a longer total SCSI bus length. This provides IS professionals the flexibility to configure server and storage areas to their liking, without regard to cable length limitations.

Some of the features that set the MegaRAID Cluster Enabler Bus Extender apart from its competition include expanding SE SCSI Bus up to 20 meters, no programming or setup, synchronous or asynchronous transfer mode See ATM.

(communications) Asynchronous Transfer Mode - (ATM, or "fast packet") A method for the dynamic allocation of bandwidth using a fixed-size packet (called a cell).

, internal or external mounting capabilities, internal and external power connectors A power connector is an electrical connector designed to carry a significant amount of electrical power, usually as DC or low-frequency AC. Some types of RF connector may also carry large amounts of power, but are considered as a separate category. , optional external power adapter An external power supply for laptop computers and just about every portable or semi-portable electronic device on the market. Also called an "AC adapter," it contains a rectifier to convert AC current to DC and a transformer to convert voltage from 120 down to 9, 12, 15 or whatever is , transparent to SCSI Bus, and a 2.5"x4" form factor.

AMI's bus extender helps boost the SCSI signal via an embedded Inserted into. See embedded system.  Symbios 120 chip and provides four multi-colored LEDs that provide device status and SCSI activity. The MegaRAID Cluster Enabler Bus Extender's LEDs allow the user to visually check the status of termpower, bus activity, adapter-power presence and current SCSI mode. In addition to its extension ability, the MegaRAID Bus Extender provides bus termination, electrical and physical isolation of the SCSI bus, and the ability to hot-plug devices.

"The MegaRAID Bus Extender provides users with greater flexibility by increasing cable lengths without costly upgrades," Richard Evins, Director of Marketing at American Megatrends American Megatrends Incorporated (AMI) is a Georgia, USA based hardware company that creates PC hardware and firmware. It was founded in 1985 by the current chairman and president, S. Shankar.  stated. "This device allows system integrators and other SCSI users to integrate newer technology on older hardware."

By providing support for greater SCSI cable lengths, users are not forced to make costly controller and device upgrades in order to achieve 20 meter distances. The MegaRAID Cluster Enabler Bus Extender, a device independent SCSI solution, provides greater flexibility by allowing a true plug and play operation that requires no software or a SCSI ID (hardware) SCSI ID - The unique address of a SCSI device. SCSI IDs range from 0 to 7 for 8-bit SCSI systems, 0 to 15 for 16-bit and 0 to 31 for 32-bit systems. The SCSI adaptor is usually assigned ID 7. A device's SCSI ID is often set by switches on the device.  to function.

Furthermore, in a daisy-chained environment, bus termination can be compromised. The MegaRAID Bus Extender uses termpower to detect an absent, disconnected, or powered down system. In the event termpower is lost, the MegaRAID Bus Extender issues a SCSI reset command and then electrically disconnects the two buses to prevent unwanted disturbances from affecting the remainder of the SCSI chain A group of SCSI peripherals connected via a SCSI port. SCSI devices are daisy chained together. The cable goes from the host adapter into device #1, then from #1 to #2 and so on. . When termpower is re-established and stable, the MegaRAID Bus Extender reconnects the two buses.
