). Headed by Dr. Arnold Saperstein, Chief Medical Officer for MetroPlus Health Plan, Inc., the study is evaluating whether 200 children ages 8 through 17 can more effectively self-manage their asthma by using the Asthma Buddy Program versus traditional reporting methods. The technology is designed to prompt children to take asthma medicines and asks a series of questions to identify symptoms that may require medical attention. The surveys are transferred daily to the care management team through the in-home device and a telephone line.

The one year study is in follow up to a six month pilot program initiated at HHC's Coney Island Hospital Coney Island Hospital is located in Brooklyn, New York City.

The hospital was founded in the late 19th century as a first-aid station to serve summer beach goers. It was established on its current site in 1909, and has since grown into a multi-site community medical center
where significant improvements in patient self-management and a reduction in emergency visits and hospitalizations through the use of the system were achieved.

The project is being funded in part by The Commonwealth Fund's Health Care, a New York City program whose purpose is to improve the quality of care for people with asthma.

"Asthma is the number one reason for emergency visits and admissions in our pediatric population. By reducing emergency and inpatient visits, we hope to improve health outcomes, which will lead to a decrease in costs," says Arnold Saperstein, M.D. Further, Dr. Saperstein stated, "I am very pleased that MetroPlus Health Plan is working with the Commonwealth Fund to measure the effect of the Asthma Buddy. We have partnered with six facilities including Jacobi Medical Center and are recruiting their children with moderate to severe asthma into our study."

Howard M. Siegel, Chief Executive Officer, speaking on behalf of AMAC commented, "We are extremely pleased to learn that both patients and their families are embracing the technology. We anticipate the study will build on the results of the Coney Island Coney Island (kō`nē), beach resort, amusement center, and neighborhood of S Brooklyn borough of New York City, SE N.Y., on the Atlantic Ocean.  pilot and believe this positive feedback is an early indication as to how AMAC technology can benefit patients with chronic conditions."
