American Institute of Physics Selects Kashya to Protect Scientific and Scholarly Data for the World Community.

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif. -- After many years of researching data protection options to ensure that the scientific community around the globe will never skip a beat with respect to finding and accessing the right information, the American Institute of Physics The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is a professional body representing American physicists and publishing physics related journals. It was founded in 1931.

The aims of the organization are: "promoting the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its

), a scientific industry service provider, has found the right solution to remotely and safely replicate critical information in the event of a data disaster: Kashya's KBX4000 Data Protection Appliance.

"Making sure that our large community of researchers, scientists, engineers and teachers always have the data to get their work done is of paramount importance to us; we view it as our commitment and our obligation," said Bill Filaski, head of AIP's IT organization. "We looked at many options to protect our data and to ensure its 24x7 availability to our users. The KBX4000 not only gives us the protection that we need, with guaranteed data consistency Data consistency summarizes the validity, accuracy, usability and integrity of related data between applications and across the IT enterprise. This ensures that each user observes a consistent view of the data, including visible changes made by the user's own transactions and , fast failover and failback capability, but it does it in a flexible and seamless manner, which is not an easy thing with our heterogeneous IT infrastructure. Kashya has exceeded our every expectation."

Data protection has been a major focus at AIP. Its online services, which are based on the Scitation(sm) hosting platform and include over 120 publications from 19 scientific societies, demand 24x7 availability. Among these services are the "Virtual Journals," best-of-breed electronic scientific publications that compile discipline-specific information from a wide variety of publishers, giving users a single source for information on a scientific subject.

To meet this challenge, AIP's data centers include a disaster recovery site located 25 miles from the main facility. With an infrastructure that consists of heterogeneous servers, heterogeneous storage and a wide range of online services, AIP needed a data protection solution that would deliver data replication that was server- and storage-independent. In addition, since its databases reside on multiple servers, a solution that could guarantee data consistency was paramount. And of critical importance to AIP, since it had no tolerance for disruption and no budget for changes to the existing infrastructure, the solution had to seamlessly adapt to AIP's organization.

"Literally every second of every day, a scientist, engineer, scholar, teacher or student somewhere around the world depends on information to get their work done, and AIP brings it to their fingertips "Fingertips" is a 1963 number-one hit single recorded live by "Little" Stevie Wonder for Motown's Tamla label. Wonder's first hit single, "Fingertips" was the first live, non-studio recording to reach number-one on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in the United States. ," said Michael Lewin, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Kashya. "This is the global 24x7 demand that our intelligent data protection appliance is uniquely able to satisfy, cost effectively and with no disruption to the existing infrastructure."

Developed from the ground up with a completely new approach, Kashya's KBX4000 delivers superior data protection at a fraction of the total cost of existing solutions. Kashya's replication architecture relies on continuous small-aperture snapshots (typically seconds apart) that minimize or eliminate the risk of data loss due to data corruption Data corruption refers to errors in computer data that occur during transmission or retrieval, introducing unintended changes to the original data. Computer storage and transmission systems use a number of measures to provide data integrity, the lack of errors. , disaster or system failures. Kashya's KBX4000 connects easily to the network infrastructure and provides bi-directional replication across any distance, offering a full spectrum of replication technologies from synchronous Refers to events that are synchronized, or coordinated, in time. For example, the interval between transmitting A and B is the same as between B and C, and completing the current operation before the next one is started are considered synchronous operations. Contrast with asynchronous.  to asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  and allowing restores from any point in time.
