American Institute of Architects, California Council Announces RK Stewart as New National VP and 2007 President Elect.


SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- At the recent AIA AIA - Application Integration Architecture  National Convention in Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States. , architect RK Stewart, with Gensler architecture, was elected as the 2006 First Vice President and the 2007 President Elect.

, a principal at Gensler Architecture, Design & Planning Worldwide, was elected during the AIA National Convention in Las Vegas. In 2007, the organization, with a current membership of nearly 75,000 licensed architects, will mark its 150th anniversary representing the nation's architects.

In his role as 2007 AIA President, Stewart will utilize his expertise and experience to increase the profession's overall value to society through the AIA's focus on advocacy, community, and knowledge. By guiding the profession toward active engagement with government through advocacy efforts, he hopes the industry will play a greater role in creating "livable communities" across the nation.

"The greatest strength of the AIA is its power to shape the future of our profession and the communities in which we live," said Stewart. "With a renewed focus and unified voice, the AIA can achieve new levels of influence at the local, state, and national levels."

Stewart's leadership within the AIA has spanned several years. He is a two-term AIA national vice president, a former AIA regional director, and a former AIA San Francisco and AIA California Council president. Representing architects, Stewart has worked closely with allied organizations such as the American Institute of Architecture Students The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) is an international organization for college-level students of architecture. It is the primary membership and advocacy organization for architecture students in the United States.  and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) is the professional association of architectural registration boards of the various states in the United States. . He has served on numerous committees, including the AIA's National Codes and Standards Committee, the Integrated Practice Strategy Group, the Intern Development Program Coordinating Committee, and the A/E A/E Architect/Engineer

To improve the communities in which Gensler practices, Stewart has been involved in advocacy efforts across the state of California and the nation to impact building and planning regulations. His contributions to the architectural profession were recognized with his investiture investiture, in feudalism, ceremony by which an overlord transferred a fief to a vassal or by which, in ecclesiastical law, an elected cleric received the pastoral ring and staff (the symbols of spiritual office) signifying the transfer of the office.  in the American Institute of Architects' College of Fellows in 2001.

RK Stewart joined Gensler in 1988, bringing extensive experience in large-scale mixed-use projects, renovation and restoration projects, and high-rise office towers. As a principal in Gensler's San Francisco office, Stewart has managed several of the firm's largest architectural projects.

Stewart and his family live in San Anselmo, CA. He received his architectural education at the University of Kansas The University of Kansas (often referred to as KU or just Kansas) is an institution of higher learning in Lawrence, Kansas. The main campus resides atop Mount Oread.  and the University of Michigan (body, education) University of Michigan - A large cosmopolitan university in the Midwest USA. Over 50000 students are enrolled at the University of Michigan's three campuses. The students come from 50 states and over 100 foreign countries. .

The AIACC represents the interests of 10,000 architects and allied professionals in California. Founded in 1944, AIACC's mission supports architects in their endeavor to improve the quality of life for all Californians by creating more livable communities, sustainable designs and quality work environments.
