American Indians in Oklahoma exceed most in science and math.

The National Indian Education Study, conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), as part of the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES), collects, analyzes, and publishes statistics on education and public school district finance information in the United States; conducts studies  and sponsored by the Office of Indian Education, is a two-part study designed to assess education conditions for American Indians American Indians: see Americas, antiquity and prehistory of the; Natives, Middle American; Natives, North American; Natives, South American.  and Alaska Natives.

The data collected for 2007 in the first part of the report provide in-depth information on educational performance by American Indian fourth- and eighth-graders in reading and math. The information analyzes American Indian academic achievement in every state but focuses on 11 states with the most American Indian students.

Of the 11 states, Oklahoma had the highest percentage of fourth-graders at or above the basic levels for reading and eighth-graders at or above basic levels for math. It tied Minnesota for the top spot in fourth-grade math, and it was second for eighth-grade reading after Oregon, although the two states' scores are considered statistically the same because of standard error differences.
