News Editors

PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 2000

Tournament of Roses President Lorne Brown today announced that esteemed journalist and author Tom Brokaw will lead the 2001 festivities as grand marshal of the 112th Rose Parade in celebration of the theme, "Fabric of America."

In Brown's words, "Who could better represent this theme and the 2001 Rose Parade than Tom Brokaw, an individual who has devoted his literary and reporting career to revealing the many faces of America."

The Tournament of Roses is honored to have Brokaw join the Tournament family as this year's grand marshal.

Through the theme "Fabric of America," the Tournament of Roses hopes to showcase the array of remarkable people, places, events and philosophies that make up this country.

Brokaw has introduced Americans, not only to the events of the day and the events of their country's past, but also to the people who made them, through his thoughtful and perceptive approach to the world.

It is this curiosity and respect that makes him the perfect representative for this year's parade. An individual accustomed to bringing history-making events to millions, Brokaw will become a part of American history himself when he joins a tradition that dates back to 1890 -- ringing in the New Year from Pasadena.

While Brokaw is widely recognized as anchor and managing editor of "NBC Nightly News NBC Nightly News is the flagship evening news program for NBC News and broadcasts from the GE Building, Rockefeller Center in New York City. It has been known by this name since August 1, 1970. ," his credits extend far beyond his anchor desk at NBC News' world headquarters in New York. The highly awarded broadcaster has put the "Fabric of America" into words with his best-selling books.

In 1998, he wrote "The Greatest Generation," an exquisite account of the generation of Americans born in the 1920s who came of age during the Great Depression, fought in the Second World War and went on to build America.

In his second work, "The Greatest Generation Speaks," the families speak for themselves through their powerful letters and Brokaw reflects on why their lives of difficulty and triumph continue to strike such a deep cord in Americans today.

The Tournament of Roses is proud to be the latest addition to Brokaw's list of "firsts," as this will be the first time he has traveled the Rose Parade route on New Year's Day New Year's Day, among ancient peoples the first day of the year frequently corresponded to the vernal or autumnal equinox, or to the summer or winter solstice. In the Middle Ages it was celebrated among Christians usually on Mar. 25. .

Other famous firsts for Brokaw include being the first to conduct an exclusive U.S. one-on-one interview with Mikhail Gorbachev and being the only anchor to report from the scene the night the Berlin Wall fell. In 1995, Brokaw was the first network evening news anchor to report from the site of the Oklahoma City bombing See Terrorism "The Oklahoma City Bombing" (Sidebar); Venue "Venue and the Oklahoma City Bombing Case" (Sidebar).  and in 1996, from the scene of the TWA Flight 800 tragedy.

This year, Brokaw again returned to Moscow for the first American television interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin and most recently, he served as master of ceremonies for the opening of the National D-Day Museum on the 56th anniversary of the Normandy invasion by the Allies.

The road to garnering such highly notable news stories began when Brokaw graduated from the University of South Dakota Nomenclature
