, parent company of HealthSpring of Tennessee, HealthSpring of Alabama and Texas HealthSpring. The new agreement extends the Company's care enhancement program for HealthSpring of Tennessee an additional two years - from Dec. 31, 2007 to 2009 - and expands the relationship to bring diabetes and heart disease programs to HealthSpring's members in Alabama and Texas beginning Jan. 1, 2004.

"Our relationship with HealthSpring is built on a mutual commitment to improve clinical and financial outcomes, both of which have been achieved to a high level," said American Healthways President and Chief Executive Officer Ben R. Leedle Jr. "Our first-year results, particularly with HealthSpring's Medicare members, have led to an even greater commitment by HealthSpring to reach more of its members through our programs. We also are excited that our HealthSpring partners will continue to be engaged with us in a strategic way and share our passion for developing innovative approaches to improving health."

As one of a select few private health plans with a Medicare+Choice program, HealthSpring didn't wait for Medicare reform to bring innovative disease management programs to its seniors. Since 2002, the health plan has been proactively delivering 16 of American Healthways' programs under the care enhancement model. Initial results are strong, proving that care enhancement - which focuses on the whole person, not just a single disease - works regardless of age or location. That success compelled NewQuest to take American Healthways' programs into new markets.

Members in the program - called HealthSpring Cares - work closely with highly trained nurses who help members understand and follow their physician's plan of care, set personal health goals and gain control of their disease instead of having their disease control them. NewQuest Chief Executive Officer Herb Fritch said, "American Healthways delivers an extremely valuable service to our members and has become an integral part of HealthSpring's success equation. In just over a year, American Healthways' programs have made a tremendous difference in our members' lives, particularly our seniors, and we are eager to bring HealthSpring Cares to our Alabama and Texas customers."
