"American Hawaii Cruises will build two new, privately funded cruise ships This is a list of cruise ships, both those in service and those that have since ceased to operate. Both cruise ships and cruiseferries are included in this list. (Ocean liners are not included on this list, see List of ocean liners. , which will be constructed in U.S. shipyards -- something that hasn't happened in more than 40 years," said Tony McKinnon, president of American Hawaii Cruises and its sister line, The Delta Queen The Delta Queen is an American sternwheel steamboat.

The Queen is 285 feet long (86.9 meters), 58 feet (17.7m) wide, and draws 11.5 feet (3.5m). The boat weighs 1,650 tons (1,676 metric tons), with a capacity of 200 passengers.

Co. "We are honored to be spearheading the first state-of-the-art technology on American cruise ships. At a capital cost of $400 million each, we will take cruise vessel technology and passenger comfort to the next level in our Hawaii ships.

"Further, by early 1999, the company will be acquiring an existing cruise ship and reflagging it as part of the American Hawaii fleet. It will join the 1,021-passenger S.S. Independence in sailing our 7-day itinerary throughout the Hawaiian islands chain," he added.

Company officials credit the financially successful S.S. Independence with paving the way for the new expansion program. More than $70 million has been invested in refurbishing the vessel during the last three years. The classic ocean liner now sails at near capacity, year-round, and is highly acclaimed, having recently won three major awards. The ship received the Onboard Services 1997 Diamond Award for its authentic "Hawaiiana" program; was the "Best of Show" winner in the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau's 1997 Keep It Hawaii competition, and was named "Best of the Best" by Travel Holiday magazine for its shore excursions program.

"American Hawaii Cruises eagerly anticipates this dramatic increase in capacity in one of the world's most popular vacation destinations," said McKinnon. "We are 100 percent committed to offering our passengers the best way to see Hawaii."

It is predicted that the growth plan will generate significant tourism for the state of Hawaii, and result in thousands of new jobs in the shipbuilding industry Noun 1. shipbuilding industry - an industry that builds ships
