American Express takes 200,000 s/f downtown.

The company is best known for its credit card, charge card and traveler's cheque businesses.  is set to add 200,000 s/f to its downtown office complex.

"With over $9.9 billion in construction projects underway or about to start within a three-block radius of the World Trade Center site, it's clear that downtown is the place to be."

American Express will expand by 200,000 s/f at 3 World Financial Center, the 2.1 million square foot building it owns in partnership with Brookfield Properties Brookfield Properties Corporation TSX: BPO NYSE: BPO is a Toronto-based North American commercial real estate company. Brookfield Asset Management owns 50% of its outstanding common shares. . AmEx already occupies 1 million s/f in its share of the tower and 215,000 s/f in the Brookfield portion.

Trammel Crow's Ric Fahey represented American Express in the lease negotiations, details of which have not been released. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Brookfield Properties, said, "The financial services industry is coming back, and tenants are embracing Lower Manhattan and the significant infrastructure investment being made here. With American Express expanding, the World Financial Center is reaffirmed as Lower Manhattan's premiere business address."

American Express--which left its space at 40 Wall Street last year--said the decision to add more downtown space was part of an effort to consolidate operations.

"We wanted to have all of [our] primary downtown locations in one building," said Judy Tenzer, a spokesperson for American Express, adding that the additional space would "accommodate for future growth."

In a statement, Thomas Schick, American Express executive vice president, said, "Lower Manhattan has been our home for over 150 years, and we're delighted that we'll be expanding here."
