American Express Creates Membership Rewards: Loyalty Program Combining Travel, Retail & Food; Bonus Promotion Starts November 1 -- Double Points.


NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 18, 1995--American Express announced today that it is expanding its highly successful Membership Miles program to include retail merchandise and gourmet gifts in addition to more travel offerings: air travel, car-rentals, hotel stays, vacation packages and Unique Experiences.

Renamed MEMBERSHIP REWARDS(SM), the new program allows enrollees to earn one point for every dollar spent on eligible American Express American Express (NYSE: AXP), sometimes known as "AmEx" or "Amex", is a diversified global financial services company, headquartered in New York City. The company is best known for its credit card, charge card and traveler's cheque businesses. (R) Cards and Optima(R) Cards. "Membership Miles has been one of the most successful travel affinity programs on the market. Now, the sky's no longer the limit," said Philip J. "Membership Rewards offers a greater variety of rewards at a range of spending levels and, unlike many other loyalty programs, these points don't expire and there is no limit to how many you can earn.

"In addition, Membership Rewards enrollees get all of the benefits of American Express Cards, such as the Purchase Protection Plan(SM) and the Buyer's Assurance Plan(SM). There is no reason why anyone should use another form of payment when they will be rewarded just for using the Card."

Double Points Promotion, November 1 -- December 15

From November 1 to December 15, Membership Rewards enrollees will earn double points when shopping at 20 of the Membership Rewards retail and gourmet partners. "This special offer actually rewards enrollees for giving generously during the holiday season," noted Bruce Grieve, vice president of Global Rewards. "The gourmet and retail partners are ideal places to shop for gifts, and shoppers will get something in return just for using their American Express Cards -- double points."

The Survey Says...

In a recent survey of 1,000 American Express Cardmembers, 87 percent said the strongest incentive program is one that offers a combination of travel, retail and food rewards. In fact, a vast majority of Cardmembers said they would shift more of their spending if American Express offered such a combination rewards program.

"Cardmembers told us what they want and that is what we created," Grieve said, noting that over four million people worldwide have enrolled in Membership Miles since it was launched in 1991, and it was named Best Affinity Card affinity card

How to Enroll

To become an American Express Cardmember or to enroll in Membership Rewards, call 1-800-AXP-EARN (297-3276). Membership Miles participants will automatically be enrolled in Membership Rewards (there is no longer a Membership Miles program). Points may be spent as soon as enough are earned -- there is no vesting period.

Spending can be combined on a variety of American Express Cards participating in Membership Rewards -- plus up to two additional Cards on each personal account. There is a $25 annual fee, which is waived for the first year, to enroll the following American Express Cards in Membership rewards: Personal (Green), Gold, Small Business Corporate Card and companion Optima and Optima Gold Cards. The annual fee for eligible Corporate Cards is $50. There is no fee for the Rewards Plus Gold Card and Platinum Card(R).
