American Electronics Association Endorses Executive Order On Legal, Licensed Software; Gov. Davis Sets Positive Example in Fight Against Software Piracy.

) commended Governor Gray Davis for signing an Executive Order today requiring all state agencies -- and third parties doing business with the State of California -- to use only legal, licensed computer software.

The order also requires state agencies to implement software management programs.

Software piracy is an illegal practice that includes the criminal counterfeiting of software. The explosion of Internet advertising Delivering ads to Internet users via Web sites, e-mail, ad-supported software and Internet-enabled cellphones. Also called an "ad network," Internet advertising organizations act as a middleman between the advertiser and the Web sites and software publishers that display the ads.  and sales of software has made it easier for consumers to be fooled into thinking that they are actually purchasing genuine software.

The Governor's Executive Order is particularly important because government agencies are among the largest users of software and can be trend setters in mandating higher standards for purchasing authentic software.

AEA is the largest high-tech trade group, representing more than 3,000 U.S.-based technology companies, including 1,400 California companies. Membership spans the industry from telecommunications and computer firms to software and semiconductor companies.
