American Electronics Association Applauds California State Board of Education for New Science Standards.

) applauded the California State Board of Education The California State Board of Education is the governing and policy-making body of the California Department of Education. The State Board of Education sets K-12 education policy in the areas of standards, instructional materials, assessment, and accountability.  Friday for adopting new K-12 science standards.

The new standards, advocated by the AEA and brought forth by the California Academic Standards Commission, are designed to strengthen public schools' science curriculum throughout the state, and better prepare California's students for the challenges of a high-tech workforce.

"The new science standards adopted by the State Board of Education will boost students' engagement in processes that build critical thinking and problem-solving skills," said Joe Dooling, senior vice president of AEA in California. "These basic science skills are essential for students who want a career in the high-tech industry," said Dooling, "and are a positive step in addressing the high-tech worker shortage."

 Dooling, implementing stronger science standards will also encourage California's education system to expect more from its students, and should spark students' interest in science studies. Dooling said, "Students not pursuing careers with high-tech companies benefit from the analytical skills developed through the study of science as well."

The new science standards are in the wake of the recent Third International Mathematics and Science Study, which revealed that American students perform poorly in areas such as math and science compared to their international counterparts from economic competitors. The study also found that California students compared poorly against students from other states.

The AEA is the largest U.S. high-tech trade group, representing more than 3,000 U.S.-based technology companies, including 1,500 California companies.
