American Eagle Outfitters Reports Record March Sales of $119.3 Million, an Increase of 1.7%.

WARRENDALE, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 2003

) today announced that total sales for the five-week period ended April 5, 2003 increased 1.7% to $119.3 million, compared to $117.4 million for the five-week period ended April 6, 2002. Comparable store sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores decreased 8.5% for the March period. Consolidated comparable store sales, which include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores, decreased 9.3% for the month compared to the corresponding period ended April 6, 2002.

Total sales for the five-week period ended April 5, 2003 include $6.0 million from the Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $7.1 million for the corresponding period last year. Bluenotes/Thriftys comparable store sales declined 20.8% in March compared to last year.

Total sales for the nine-week period ended April 5, 2003 increased 2.7% to $193.6 million, compared to $188.5 million for the nine-week period ended April 6, 2002. Comparable store sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores decreased 7.9% for the nine-week period. Consolidated comparable store sales, which include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores, decreased 8.8% for the period compared to the corresponding period ended April 6, 2002.

Total sales for the nine-week period include $10.0 million from the Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $11.7 million for the corresponding period last year. Bluenotes/Thriftys comparable store sales declined 19.9% for the period compared to the corresponding period last year.
