The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill (see Sutter, John Augustus) along the river in 1848 led to the California gold rush of Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ ACCJ American Chamber of Commerce in Japan ) announced Thursday the opening of a regional branch in Nagoya, the result of a merger with the American Business Community of Nagoya (ABCN ABCN American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology ). The Chubu Chapter is the ACCJ's first new regional branch since the Osaka-based Kansai Chapter was added in 1951, the ACCJ said in a press release. ''To define the American business presence in Japan as being limited to or focused on Tokyo and Osaka is far too narrow,'' said ACCJ President Robert Grondine, commenting on how the Chubu Chapter fits into the ACCJ's strategy. ''U.S. companies are making increasingly important contributions outside the Kanto and Kansai regions “Kansai” redirects here. For the airport, see Kansai International Airport. The Kansai region (関西地方 , and the ACCJ's vision is to provide a proactive presence to support those companies, whenever and wherever possible,'' he said. The Chubu region includes Aichi Prefecture and neighboring neigh·bor n. 1. One who lives near or next to another. 2. A person, place, or thing adjacent to or located near another. 3. A fellow human. 4. Used as a form of familiar address. v. areas centering on Nagoya and accounts for about 14% of Japan's gross domestic product. Commenting on the merger of the two groups, ABCN President Robert Roche said, ''All of us in Nagoya are looking forward to incorporating our organization into the ACCJ. We feel it is the best way to realize the goals of the American business community in the Chubu area and make our voices heard locally, nationally and internationally.'' The ACCJ currently has 3,100 members. The Nagoya Chapter has 86 members. |
