Buprenorphine is a drug being used in a new office-based treatment for addiction to prescription pain relievers and other opiate drugs, including heroin. While the drug is intended to aid in addiction treatment, buprenorphine is potent (20 to 50 times the analgesic analgesic (ăn'əljē`zĭk), any of a diverse group of drugs used to relieve pain. Analgesic drugs include the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as the salicylates, narcotic drugs such as morphine, and synthetic drugs  potency of morphine morphine, principal derivative of opium, which is the juice in the unripe seed pods of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. It was first isolated from opium in 1803 by the German pharmacist F. W. A. ), has a long duration of action, and does not need to be injected, therefore the potential for abuse is high.

Stan Cipkowski, ABMC Chief Executive Officer stated, "Many of our customers in Europe indicated a need for a screen for buprenorphine so we developed a test to meet those needs. It is available in a single test or can be inserted into one of our multi panel devices. This is just another example of ABMC's ability to customize our products to meet the ever changing needs of the drugs of abuse testing market."

The product is currently available to non-clinical markets. ABMC plans to submit their screen for buprenorphine to the FDA FDA
