America loses a president, park ranger.


Former President Gerald R. Ford died Dec. 26, 2006, and was known to the world as the 38th American president

. But he was also the only president to serve as a park ranger A park ranger is a person charged with protecting and preserving protected parklands, forests (then called a forest ranger), wilderness areas, as well as other natural resources and protected cultural resources. .

During the summer of 1936, Ford served as a National Park Service park ranger in Yellowstone National Park Yellowstone National Park, 2,219,791 acres (899,015 hectares), the world's first national park (est. 1872), NW Wyo., extending into Montana and Idaho. It lies mainly on a broad plateau in the Rocky Mts., on the Continental Divide, c. . Among his duties were feeding bears and scurrying scur·ry

Ford said the experience was one of the greatest summers of his life. This sentiment was reflected during his presidency when he added 18 areas to the National Park System.
