America Online Members Go Ape Over the Newest Baby Gorilla at the Bronx Zoo More than 440,000 AOL Members Nationwide Name the Latest Addition to the Bronx Zoo's Gorilla Family.

Of a field of five possible names, AOL members crowned the new baby Zola, which means "quietness" in Swahili. The promotion was part of "What's New @ the Zoo," a new programming area that brings the delight and the enjoyment of the zoo directly to AOL members.

"Choosing a name for our new animals is always a fun challenge, and we are thrilled that AOL's members could assist," said Richard L. Zola, which received 33% of the final vote, beat out four other names. The complete results of the contest are as follows:

Juma, which means 'born on a Friday', received 25% of the vote

Kuchimba, which translates to Doug, the name of the baby's

caretaker, received 21%

Njoku, which means yams, the baby's favorite food, received 14%

Matunde, which means fruits, came in last with 7%.

AOL and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS See Windows CardSpace. ), which oversees the Bronx Zoo, teamed up to sponsor the "Name The Baby Gorilla" poll. In addition to playing a role in the naming of the new baby gorilla, members can look through a gorilla family photo album and access quick facts and statistics to learn more about the lowland gorilla. This feature is part of a larger partnership between AOL and the WCS to promote the Internet's role in wildlife appreciation and conservation.

Born to mom Tuti and dad Zuri, Zola joins the gorilla family at the Bronx Zoo, which is home to the largest group of lowland gorillas in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. . Zola and her family reside in the Congo Gorilla Forest, the Bronx Zoo's massive 6.5 acre exhibit of western gorillas, okapi, mandrills and other wildlife. Since its opening in 1999, this award-winning exhibit has inspired millions of visitors and raised more than $3.5 million toward Wildlife Conservation Society's (WCS) African conservation projects.
