America Online Announces Appointment of Miles R. Gilburne to Board of Directors.

Gilburne, Senior Vice President for Corporate Development, has been elected to the Company's Board of Directors. Gilburne, who joined America Online in 1995, will continue in his role as head of Corporate Development through the end of 1999.

As a member of the Company's senior executive team for the past five years, Mr. Gilburne has helped to set AOL's strategic course. Gilburne engineered the three-way transaction resulting in AOL's acquisition of CompuServe and the sale of ANS (ANS Communications, Inc, Purchase, NY) An ISP, Internet backbone and provider of private data network services, founded in 1990 as Advanced Network & Services, Inc., by IBM, MCI and Merit (consortium of Michigan universities).  Communications to WorldCom in 1998.

He was a principal architect of the Company's acquisition of Netscape Communications and formation of a strategic alliance with Sun Microsystems in 1999. And this spring, he helped put together the Company's strategic relationship with Hughes Electronics, including a $1.5 billion investment in Hughes, to advance the Company's "AOL Anywhere" strategy.

Gilburne has played a key role helping to create the Company's international joint ventures in Europe, Asia and Latin America. After launching its first international service in 1995, America Online now has more than 3 million members outside the U.S. Gilburne also spotted the potential of ICQ ("I Seek You") A conferencing program for the Internet from Mirabilis, Tel Aviv, Israel (www.icq.com). It provides interactive chat, e-mail and file transfer and can alert you when someone on your predefined list has also come online. , overseeing the acquisition of Mirabilis in 1998.

Prior to joining the Company in 1995, Mr. Gilburne, 48, was a general partner of The Cole Gilburne Fund, an early stage venture capital fund. Gilburne and David Cole collaborated in building NaviSoft, Inc., an Internet software development company purchased by America Online in November 1994.

Gilburne earned a law degree from Harvard Law School Harvard Law School (colloquially, Harvard Law or HLS) is one of the professional graduate schools of Harvard University. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard Law is considered one of the most prestigious law schools in the United States.  and his undergraduate degree from Princeton University.
