AOL, the world's largest interactive services company, awarded grants of up to $10,000 each to 11 middle and high schools from Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland to implement 2003-2004 school-year programs designed to nurture the lifetime career aspirations of disadvantaged youth. The grants are meant to be used as flexible resources to help raise students' aspirations. Some of the funds may be used for student projects, college awareness activities, rewards and recognition of student achievement, supplies to enable students to pursue particular interests, and support to restructure a department or area in the school that would impact students and raise their aspirations.

In addition to this year's grants, AOL also announced the award of renewal grants to 12 of last year's AOL Aspires schools to continue the success of the programs they initiated during the 2002-2003 school year. To date AOL has awarded more than a quarter-million dollars in grants to local schools.

"The AOL Aspires program is at the heart of America Online's efforts to open the doors of education and opportunity to youth in our community," said Miller. "These grants will help schools as they encourage their students to aspire and achieve in both their academic and personal lives."

Public schools from the greater DC-metro area were eligible to apply for the AOL Aspires grants. The schools were asked to submit proposals outlining programs they would offer to help their students establish and achieve their academic and personal aspirations. Proposals from the schools were then reviewed by a committee of AOL employees who, in turn, visited each school and made recommendations for grant finalists.
