Each For Creative Programs to Realize the Dreams of Disadvantaged

After-school mentoring, college tours, nutrition programs, reading skills development and character-building initiatives are among the innovative approaches to realizing the dreams of disadvantaged youth that will be supported by the first AOL Aspirations Grants. The grants will be announced today by America Online See AOL. , Inc. Vice Chairman Ted Leonsis and baseball legend Cal Ripken at a Capitol Hill ceremony.

AOL, the world's largest interactive services company, is awarding grants of up to $10,000 each to 12 middle and high schools from Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland to implement 2002-2003 school-year programs designed to nurture the lifetime career aspirations of disadvantaged youth.

"By supporting efforts to bring together creative approaches, talented educators and role-model mentors, we hope these grants will help inspire young people to achieve their potential and open doors that may have been closed to them before."

Public schools from Washington, DC; Loudoun, Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William Counties as well as the cities of Falls Church Falls Church, independent city (1990 pop. 9,578), NE Va., a residential suburb of Washington, D.C.; inc. as a town 1875, as a city 1948. There is diverse light manufacturing, including telecommunications equipment. , Manassas and Alexandria in Virginia; and Montgomery County Montgomery County may refer to:
  • Montgomery County, Alabama
  • Montgomery County, Arkansas
  • Montgomery County, Georgia
  • Montgomery County, Illinois
  • Montgomery County, Indiana
  • Montgomery County, Iowa
  • Montgomery County, Kansas
 in Maryland were eligible to apply for the grants. The schools were asked to develop proposals outlining programs they would develop to help their students establish and achieve their goals. Proposals were then evaluated by a committee of AOL employees. A list of winning schools is attached.

The grants are meant to be used as flexible resources to help raise students' aspirations. Some of the funds may be used for student projects, college awareness activities, rewards and recognition of student achievement, supplies to enable students to pursue particular interests and support to restructure a department or area in the school that would impact students and raise their aspirations.

This year's AOL Aspirations Fund grants will serve as a pilot program that will expand locally as well as into other AOL locations around the country over the next several years.

The Aspirations Fund grants are part of AOL Aspires, America Online's national philanthropic strategy designed to foster the imaginations and aspirations of disadvantaged youth. Under this theme, AOL is sponsoring a range of initiatives that focus on economically disadvantaged youth and help them to reach their potential through educational and career opportunities, while nurturing creative talent.
