America Online, Inc. Debuts New AIM.com and AIM(R) Today.

America Online, Inc. and the AOL(R) Instant Messenger(TM) (AIM(R)) service today announced the debut of a new AIM.com home page (www.aim.com) and redesigned AIM(R) Today companion screen. The new AIM.com and AIM Today offer a fresh look and feel, with the latter being updated four times throughout the day. Both provide users with easier access to their preferred communications services while surfacing compelling content and interactive features from third-party partners and America Online, Inc.
"AIM(R) and AIM(R) Mail users are incredibly connected and like to multi-task. It's typical for them to send SMS text messages, check e-mail and exchange instant messages, all while searching the Web and listening to AOL(R) Radio," said Chamath Palihapitiya, vice president and general manager, AIM and ICQ, America Online, Inc. "That's why we have updated AIM.com and AIM Today to give users more convenient access to our suite of integrated communications tools as well as our continually updated content and rich entertainment services."
The company has also begun rolling out a system-wide upgrade of the AIM 5.9 service that will introduce the new AIM Today and deliver the AOL(R) Explorer browser as an optional feature for AIM users. The tabbed AOL Explorer browser is the ideal platform for the delivery of AIM Today and offers an enhanced Web browsing experience that does not affect users' default browser settings. It also offers integration with the AIM Mail and AOL(R) Mail services for convenient access to e-mail messages.
"The AIM service has become the front door to more than 43 million Americans' social networks," said Bill Schreiner, vice president, Programming for America Online, Inc. "The new AIM Today is designed to help them integrate music, entertainment, games and social networking features like AIM(R) Fight into that setting, and easily share them with friends, family members and colleagues."
Features of the new AIM.com home page include:
--One-click access to America's most popular instant messaging service and its complete suite of communications offerings. This includes the Windows(R), Mac(R) and Linux versions of the AIM(R) service, including the latest beta software, codenamed Triton, as well as downloadable and WAP 2 versions of the Mobile AIM(R) service. It also includes the free, Web-based AIM Mail service, which lets AIM users use their AIM(R) Screen Name as an e-mail address and offers industry-leading spam and e-mail virus protection plus two gigabytes of storage.
--Fun user features like the new AIM(R) Blogs, which supports photo blogging; 40 interactive AIM(R) Games, and approximately 4,000 AIM(R) Expressions. These include AOL's popular animated 2-D and 3-D buddy icons, buddy sounds and buddy wallpapers, which help users personalize the instant messaging experience to be more expressive.
--A wide array of instant messaging robots ('bots') that allow users to interact, play and get essential information updates in real time. This season's hottest bots include the "MLB" Buddy for Major League Baseball stats, scores and updates, and the "MillionaireIM" bot, which lets users help stumped contestants as a part of the "Ask the Audience" lifeline on the syndicated "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" show from Buena Vista Television.
Features of the new AIM Today companion screen include:
--A dynamic, content-rich interface that is updated four times throughout the day according to daypart to present users with the most relevant news, programming and interactive features.
--Access to the full range of AOL.com(R) programming and interactive features, including pre-set and on-demand content from AOL News, AOL Music, AOL Television, AOL Radio, Moviefone and more.
--A unique LiveWeb(TM) feature that surfaces what's hot on the Web in real-time so that users always know what people are gravitating toward online and talking about across the blogosphere.
--A full range of AOL Search services to help users find everything from local listings to the hottest videos, from trendy consumer electronics products to the best prices on travel services.
--One-click access to the AIM(R) Music Interview of the Week, a casual AIM(R) chat appearing regularly on AOL Music (www.aolmusic.com) that generates fun and spontaneous responses and allows featured artists to talk about what's on their mind.
--Access to AIM Fight (www.AIMFIGHT.com), which lets AOL(R) members and AIM(R) users see how connected they are to the online community at any given moment. By entering their AOL or AIM Screen Name, as well as that of a friend, users can square off against their buddies to see just how popular they really are, and compare Buddy List(R) rank.
--Coming Soon: A gallery of AIM(R) Profiles, including the option to search user profiles, rate others via the "Rate-A-Buddy" feature and submit photos for others to view.
