To take place subsequently. 13 years, many of the WOOD 100 companies that caught our eye have been featured in articles published in W&WP and sister publication, Custom Woodworking Business. But up until now, no attempt was made to determine which of the WOOD 100 companies deserved to be singled Out for special praise--not only for being fast growing, but for representing the best that the American woodworking industry has to offer. With this in mind, the editors of W&WP went back and pored over the qualification forms submitted by the WOOD 100 class of 2002. We looked for details that reflected a company's adoption of best practices in terms of productivity, quality, design, management structure, environmental commitment and more. This was an arduous challenge to say the least. Slowly but surely, and aided with additional information gleaned from past WOOD 100 forms, company Web sites, magazine articles and other information sources, the field was narrowed from 100 to 25 to 10. Ultimately, the editors breathed a collective sigh of relief and anointed "Anointed" redirects here. For the process of anointing, see Anointing. Bird-in-Hand Woodworks of Lancaster, PA, as America's Best. Bird-in-Hand, the woodworking division of Childcraft Inc., ranked No. 61 in last year's WOOD I00 and posted $19 million in sales last year. What most impresses us, though, is its long commitment to woodworking education. The company has devised and implemented a thorough training program that gives each employee opportunities to learn new skills and improve his pay as he does so. As readers will glean glean v. gleaned, glean·ing, gleans v.intr. To gather grain left behind by reapers. v.tr. 1. Strong Cases for Nine Others Such an exhaustive, yet subjective exercise as choosing America's Best is wont for controversy. While we stand firmly behind our choice, we readily acknowledge that each of the companies appearing in the WOOD 100 must be doing something right to grace our report in the first place. Yet, while each WOOD 100 company merits consideration for being honored as "America's Best," some stood out to us more than others did. Following are the other companies that made our final list, appearing in alphabetical order. Charles Alan Inc. Ft.
