AmeriCU to open Armory Square branch office


SYRACUSE - Rome-based AmeriCU Credit Union is apparently set to open a new office in Armory Square Armory Square is a small neighborhood on the west side of Downtown Syracuse, New York. It began life as a busy commercial and industrial area just to the west of the central city. .

Signs in currently vacant space at 202 Walton St. say that an AmeriCU location is coming soon.

"We're excited about the opportunity to serve the downtown Syracuse Downtown Syracuse is the economic center of Syracuse, New York, and Central New York, employing over 30,000 people, and housing over 2,000. In December, AmeriCU opened branches in Cicero, Lowville, and Herkimer. The credit union has total assets of more than $659 million and more than 100,000 members in Onondaga, Oswego, Cayuga, Madison, Jefferson, Lewis, and Herkimer counties, as well as parts of Oneida County Oneida County is the name of several counties in the United States:

AmeriCU has 14 branches. In addition to the planned location in Armory Square, the credit union's Web site states new branches are coming soon in Utica and Fayetteville.

AmeriCU has $572.9 million in total loans and $580.9 million in total deposits. As of December 2007, the institution employed 238 people.

AmeriCU began life in 1951 as the Griffiss Employees Credit Union and operated from a desk in the headquarters building at Griffiss Air Force Base Griffiss Air Force Base was a U.S. Air Force base in Rome, New York. Ground was broken on August 2, 1941 for the Rome Air Depot, to be completed in 1942. After a series of names and realignments, the base was finally named Griffiss Air Force Base in 1948. The base is named for Lt.  in Rome. At the time. the credit union served the base's civilian employees.

The charter eventually expanded to allow more members and the name later changed to Griffiss-Oneida Federal Credit Union. The credit union went through a pair of mergers in 1985 and 1988 and eventually changed its name in 2000 to AmeriCU.

Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, or worships in its eight-county footprint.
