Amdahl and Fujitsu Demonstrate Eight-Node Intel Pentium II Xeon Cluster Solution With Oracle8i Parallel Server.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1998--

Oracle OpenWorld Oracle OpenWorld is an annual Oracle event for business decision-makers, IT management, and line of business end users. It is held in major cities around the world. The 2007 event was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.  to be the scene of the first integrated solution

of its kind, stemming from one company.

Amdahl(R) Corporation and Fujitsu(R) Limited today exhibited a technology demonstration of Oracle8i(TM) Parallel Server on an eight-node, Microsoft(R) Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. "We are delighted to be exhibiting this integrated solution at Oracle OpenWorld," said Greg Grodhaus, senior vice president of marketing for Amdahl Corporation. "This seamless integration An addition of a new application, routine or device that works smoothly with the existing system. It implies that the new feature or program can be installed and used without problems. Contrast with "transparent," which implies that there is no discernible change after installation.  technology showcases our ability to integrate multiple, high-standard servers that can scale to meet the major IT challenges facing global businesses."

The Fujitsu teamserver systems running Oracle8i Parallel Server and Windows NT, use the Synfinity interconnect to support a Virtual Interface (VI) Architecture based network. The VI Architecture specification is an industry standard with the support of over 100 companies. The Synfinity interconnect network consists of high-speed PCI cards and six-port low latency Low latency allows human-unnoticeable delays between an input being processed and the corresponding output providing real time characteristics. This can be especially important for internet connections utilizing services such as online gaming and VOIP - VOIP is not as important as  switches capable of operating at speeds up to 1.6 Gigabytes bi-directional. Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
(R)-based version of Synfinity that will support the VI Architecture is also under development at Fujitsu.

"The impressive demonstration by Fujitsu and Amdahl highlights the growing industry support for the VI specification," said Dave Cowan, Vice President, Enterprise Server Group, Intel Corporation (company) Intel Corporation - A US microelectronics manufacturer. They produced the Intel 4004, Intel 8080, Intel 8086, Intel 80186, Intel 80286, Intel 80386, Intel 486 and Pentium microprocessor families as well as many other integrated circuits and personal computer networking . "We are pleased to have a company like Fujitsu rapidly advancing the capabilities of high performance Intel(R) Architecture based server clusters."

and Internet applications, because it is the first application environment capable of supporting high-volume mission-critical Internet transactions. Other customer benefits include: Cache Fusion(TM) clustering technology, enabling unlimited scalability through dedicated high-speed interconnects, Fast-Start Architecture that improves recovery time by nearly 5000 percent, Online reorganization, allowing database maintenance to be done while users access data and a Single System View, simplifying cluster management by making an entire cluster of servers appear as one system to the administrator.

"The Oracle8i eight-node Windows NT cluster Fujitsu is showcasing at Oracle OpenWorld is a clear indication that Oracle and its partners continue to raise the scalability bar for databases running on Windows NT," said Michael Rocha, senior vice president of Oracle Platform Technologies. "Oracle8i Parallel Server combined with Fujitsu's teamserver systems can reduce our customers' total cost of ownership because it enables the consolidation of Windows NT departmental servers into a single and easier to manage system."
