Amdahl TDMF gives Allianz security.SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1998-- Allianz-subsidiary AGIS migrates 2.5 terabytes of highly sensitive data using Amdahl TDMF TDMF Transparent Data Migration Facility TDMF Time Division Matrix Function (Transparent Data Migration Facility) Amdahl Corporation (company) Amdahl Corporation - A US computer manufacturer. Amdahl is a major supplier of large mainframes, UNIX and Open Systems software and servers, data storage subsystems, data communications products, applications development software, and a variety of educational and today announced that the Allianz insurance group had successfully migrated 2.5 terabytes of data on 1,200 volumes from S/390(TM) subsystems to the latest generation RAID storage systems. This data migration represents the equivalent of 625 million pages of text, or enough information to fill 50,000 four-drawer filing cabinets. Allianz Gesellschaft fur Informatik Service mbH (AGIS), a subsidiary of the Allianz group, in May 1998 signed a company-wide license agreement for 20 TDMF licenses. TDMF is Amdahl's storage management solution for S/390. TDMF eliminates downtime during data migration and maintains full user access to data and continuous availability of applications throughout the process even during peak times, as a result, AGIS's systems have remained constantly available, enabling 65,000 users to continue working productively without downtime. "TDMF is both easy to install and easy to use," explains Wolfgang Hein, a technology manager at AGIS. "With TDMF, data migration projects at AGIS can be handled without any additional manpower. Despite the sheer size of this migration, we have not needed to work week-ends or night shifts and, all the while, have been able to keep the systems up and running." Each of the Allianz insurance group's applications--managing sensitive data to support the sales force, for internal accounting, and for handling branch and regional offices transactions--remain 100% available with TDMF. Data migration becomes straightforward and can take place during on-line production, thereby eliminating downtime. Other TDMF features reinforced AGIS's decision: TDMF is a vendor independent software solution, which transfers data between System/390 data storage systems, regardless of vendor or version. It is a software solution and does not have mandatory hardware requirements. As such, AGIS is free to choose the storage solution which best meets the company's needs without having to make additional, expensive hardware investments for data migration. TDMF makes the grouping, management and balance of workloads easy for AGIS. It can also be used in shared DASD A disk subsystem accessed by two or more mainframes. A "shared disk array" is the same type of system in the non-mainframe world. Disks shared in a LAN are called "file servers" or "database servers" and are not subsystems, but complete computer systems with attached disk drives. See SAN. environments. Applications at Allianz access one disk from several CPUs--TDMF takes care of the data integrity during the migration of this disk.
