Amdahl Sets Up State-of-the-Art UNIX Computer Center for Commerzbank.

Amdahl Global Solutions, a division of Amdahl Corporation, today announced the creation of one of Europe's largest and most advanced UNIX(R) computer centers at Commerzbank AG. Amdahl Global Solutions co-ordinated and headed up the major project in the role of prime contractor, and was also responsible for planning the entire technical infrastructure in accordance with Commerzbank's specified requirements. Technical implementation took place in co-operation with Amdahl Global Solution' strategic alliance partner, Sun Microsystems(TM) in Central Europe.

Tens of millions of Deutschmark's were set aside for the design, development and implementation of the new computer center which will help Commerzbank process its worldwide trading transactions securely and efficiently in addition to offering customers an even higher level of tailor-made financial solutions from a single source. With this action Germany's 3rd largest privately owned bank, Commerzbank AG, is set to become a global player in the area of investment banking.

Commerzbank's objective was to integrate Commerz Financial Products GmbH (CFP), an autonomous derivatives subsidiary, into the parent company's organization, thereby repositioning investment banking as a strategic focus of business at the core of the company. At the same time, the integration of CFP's systems into Commerzbank AG has ensured compliance with the German Banking Law's minimum requirements for the conduct of commercial business by financial institutions, while also providing appropriate solutions for the euro introduction and the forthcoming change of millennium.

What used to be over 400 distributed CFP workstations and server systems are to be consolidated to facilitate streamlined computer centre operations at mainframe level. The new systems satisfy the most exacting demands in terms of performance, availability and security. Sun(TM) Enterprise(TM) 10000 servers with no fewer than 400 processors have already been installed and assigned to various quality assurance and production tasks. New applications are to be developed in isolation on smaller Sun Solaris(R) systems. This configuration ensures that, even in the case of full-blown test runs simulating live operation, there is no chance of fictitious or erroneous orders slipping through.
