Amdahl Millennium Global Servers Lead in TPF Performance.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 1999--

Amdahl Corp. Tuesday made public the results of benchmark testing that demonstrated the industry-leading performance of its Millennium(tm) Global Servers in a System/390 Transaction Processing Facility (operating system) Transaction Processing Facility - (TPF) A real-time mainframe operating system released by IBM around 1976. TPF is particularly suited to organisations dealing in very high I/O message switching and large global networks.  (TPF (Transaction Processing Facility) An operating system for IBM mainframes specialized for large transaction processing systems such as airline reservations. TPF supports thousands of terminals with a typical response time of two to three seconds. ) environment.

, supports transactions requiring extremely high input/output (I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

The TPF-on-Millennium benchmarks confirm the advantage of Millennium servers. Two sets of tests were performed -- one with a Millennium GS765 in single-image mode and one with a Millennium GS765 and a GS725 loosely coupled See loose coupling.  running workload based on a real-world customer workload.

The results were conclusive. In single-image mode, the Millennium GS765 clocked just short of 50,000 I/Os per second. Published reports from other vendors under similar conditions do not yield these performance characteristics. The multi-image profile yielded a rate of 40,000 I/Os per second, exceeding expectations by 2,000 I/Os per second.

"TPF is at the heart of the majority of airline and financial industries that demand a secure, predictable environment for handling billions of transactions," said David West, vice president, Systems Marketing at Amdahl. "Millennium Global Servers provide that environment. Current business practices, globalization globalization

Process by which the experience of everyday life, marked by the diffusion of commodities and ideas, is becoming standardized around the world. Factors that have contributed to globalization include increasingly sophisticated communications and transportation
, Internet developments all contribute to a transaction-oriented world that can be well-served by TPF on a Millennium Global Server."

The impressive results of the Millennium Global Servers were achieved without the benefit of the IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Channel Redrive feature sometimes used in TPF environments to increase I/O rates. Millennium Global Servers are designed, built, and tested with demanding TPF requirements in mind, and their high I/O rate derives from an extremely fast input/output processor (IOP IOP

intraocular pressure.

).

Because the Channel Redrive approach eliminates the ability of direct access storage devices (DASD (Direct Access Storage Device) Pronounced "daz-dee." A peripheral device that is directly addressable, such as a disk or drum. The term is used in the mainframe world.

DASD - Direct-Access Storage Device
) to reconnect over multiple paths, the Millennium design is more efficient, yielding equivalent or higher I/O rates and at the same time offering greater DASD access and lower cost.

The Amdahl 2000A Series, the latest in the Millennium Family, uses the same design as the Millennium 700 Series but has faster internal processing speeds and can be expected to yield even higher I/O rates. Millennium support for TPF is more evidence of Amdahl's commitment to helping customers take charge of change.

Benchmarks are performed in controlled circumstances and results are highly dependent on workload and operating environment. Actual results in any particular operating environment are likely to be different from the results obtained in this study.
