Amdahl Introduces EnView for Automated Application Response Monitoring.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 8, 1998--

Industry-leading technology provides early warning system for management of end-user service levels.

Amdahl Corporation (company) Amdahl Corporation - A US computer manufacturer. Amdahl is a major supplier of large mainframes, UNIX and Open Systems software and servers, data storage subsystems, data communications products, applications development software, and a variety of educational and  today introduced EnView(tm) by Amdahl, a systems management solution that proactively measures business application availability and response time. Unlike traditional component-based performance tools, EnView enables service level management based on actual end-user experience, offering real-time reporting through visual displays and audible alarms.

This new Amdahl solution is based on technology recently acquired from Bell Atlantic, which promoted the product under the name Sentinel. EnView is unique in that it was developed by Bell Atlantic to meet its need for managing service levels based on the actual application response times experienced by its end-users. Bell Atlantic had sold the product to major companies in the telecommunications, computer leasing, and health insurance industries.

"EnView is unlike any other tool that measures application availability and response time," said Fabio Leoni Leoni can refer to:
  • Leoni Township, Michigan
  • Leoni (formerly Assenbuch) in Bavaria
  • Endrio Leoni, Italian road bicycle racer
  • Giacomo Leoni otherwise James Leoni, architect in England
  • Leone Leoni, Italian Renaissance sculptor and medallist
, vice president and general manager, Systems Management Group, Amdahl Corporation. "It measures end-to-end business processes and proactively sends alerts and alarms that can be acted upon immediately. With this early warning system in place, CIOs will know the actual service levels being provided to end-users of key business applications and will be able to fix problems before they become critical."

"EnView allows us to keep in touch with our end-users' availability and response time. We know the minute when the end-user is experiencing a problem," says Gerry Higgins, vice president of data center network distributed resources for Bell Atlantic. "This allows us to close the gap between IT Management and the end-user's perspective. Through the use of EnView, end-to-end availability of our business applications has been significantly enhanced."

EnView is an important addition to help accomplish Amdahl's strategy of providing mission-critical business applications throughout the enterprise. This is enabled by applying Amdahl's 26 years of experience in the largest global computing environments to a variety of hardware, software and service offerings from Amdahl and its technology partners.

service levels must be managed. In the absence of appropriate tools, companies have sought to manage on the basis of infrastructure resources rather than from an end-user perspective. EnView provides information required to truly manage end-user experience, based on unique end-to-end resource monitoring. It is a tool that helps IT organizations determine what levels of service are being provided, whether service is being degraded de·grad·ed

The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. . It provides the ability to manage based on total response time from the distributed desktop to the data center and back, accurately reflecting user experience.

Service level metrics metrics Managed care A popular term for standards by which the quality of a product, service, or outcome of a particular form of Pt management is evaluated. See TQM.  that include a measure of end-to-end application availability and response time can be a valuable asset in a business environment. Until recently, however, measurement has been primarily a reactive process. Tools like EnView, which capture response time from the end-user perspective without application instrumentation, are just emerging. The strength of EnView is its ability to process real transaction samples (i.e., from the eyes of the user).

EnView software has the proven capability to identify:

Applications that are not operational prior to the start of the new business day Applications experiencing slow response times Applications not meeting service level objectives Network congestion In data networking and queueing theory, network congestion occurs when a link or node is carrying so much data that its quality of service deteriorates. Typical effects include queueing delay, packet loss or the blocking of new connections.  Differences among similar applications running at different computer centers

EnView software is installed at end-user locations where it simulates business critical transactions, performing representative end-user transactions. Response time data is collected and transmitted to a central location where a real-time view of application performance is displayed on the EnView Monitor. Service level data generated by EnView may be stored in a central reporting repository for historical reporting by application and by location, enabling service level trending for IS management and the user community.
