Amdahl Expands Fiber Optic Services to Support Growing Base of Global Parallel Sysplex Enterprise Customers; Customers Choose Amdahl as Preferred Service Provider for Its Combined Expertise in Fiber Optic Cabling and Parallel Sysplex for Non-stop, Continuous Datacenter Availability.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1996--Amdahl Corporation today announced expanded Fiber Optic Services introducing Design and Implementation services to complement its existing Assessment and Planning services. The newly expanded suite of Fiber Optic Services enables Amdahl to offer a comprehensive fiber optic package, addressing the early stages of assessment and planning through the final stages of design, installation and testing for ESCON (Enterprise Systems CONnection) An IBM S/390 fiber-optic channel that transfers 17 Mbytes/sec over distances up to 60 km depending on connection type. ESCON allows peripheral devices to be located across large campuses and metropolitan areas.  (Enterprise Systems Connection) infrastructures. Increasingly, worldwide enterprise datacenters are replacing copper-based cabling with fiber optic cabling as they transition to Parallel Sysplex IBM's System/390 clustering architecture. It allows multiple System/390 computers to work together as a single system. It supports data sharing with guaranteed integrity, extensive resource sharing and sophisticated workload balancing. . Parallel Sysplex provides the key benefit of non-stop, continuous availability by connecting multiple mainframes together for complete redundancy using fiber optic cabling.

"When we initiated plans to transition to ESCON technology, we turned to Amdahl to give us the help we needed," according to according to

The service seeks to improve its performance through the development of efficient mail-handling systems and operates its own planning and engineering programs. . "They had the experience in both the design and implementation of fiber optic services which gave us the confidence to move forward. As a result, Amdahl provided the knowledge and capability to install fiber optics fiber optics, transmission of digitized messages or information by light pulses along hair-thin glass fibers. Early courier systems for government use were organized in the Persian Empire under Cyrus, in the Roman Empire, and in medieval ."

The expanded suite of Fiber Optic Services is a natural extension to Amdahl support for Parallel Sysplex. In addition to continuous availability, Parallel Sysplex offers other key benefits including high-performance and data sharing. However, data sharing can be limited if ESCON architectures are not deployed. In ESCON environments, fiber optic cabling is the data transmission medium. As organizations move to Parallel Sysplex, the need for fiber optic cabling arises.

Amdahl will initially target large System/390 class datacenters with multiple CPUs who are upgrading to ESCON capable devices. Other prospects include early ESCON users, and FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. , LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. , MAN and WAN network installations looking to upgrade to the latest fiber optic technology.

"The expanded Fiber Optic Services are in response to our customers., needs as they transition to Parallel Sysplex and distributed computing," said Amdahl Vice President and General Manager, Customer Services, Bill Ferone. "Our new Design and Implementation services for ESCON plus our existing Assessment and Planning services offer our customers a complete fiber optic solution that have met or exceeded their ESCON requirements."

Amdahl provides complete, end-to-end Fiber Optic Services beginning with assessment and planning for an ESCON solution. Once an ESCON solution is clearly identified, Amdahl designs the Fiber Optic solution to meet ESCON requirements. Experienced, certified Amdahl Field Engineers transition the customer.,s environment to the new technology while retaining the high availability of business-critical applications. Amdahl uses non-proprietary, state-of-the-art components to protect the customer.,s investment, and thoroughly tests cabling and ESCON connections.
