Amdahl Corporation awarded $22 million contract by Commercial Data Servers Inc.; End-to-end service and support contract to be provided for integrated hardware and software enterprise servers.


SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 1997--Amdahl Corporation today announced award of a two-year service and support contract estimated at $22 million from Commercial Data Servers Inc. (CDS). The contract furthers the Amdahl industry leadership position in multivendor enterprise support and service. Amdahl currently provides multivendor service and support for some of the world's largest multi-national, Information Technology (IT) organizations.

The newly awarded contract will enable CDS to offer both large and small enterprise customers a "one-stop" service and support solution for their products, according to according to

Commercial Data Servers Inc. manufactures and distributes System/390 compatible hardware and software solutions. Products include the CDS-0 Enterprise Server, the first in a series of CMOS-based System/390 servers featuring mainframe-class characteristics that are "ready-to-work" upon installation. The CDS-0 features pre-loaded S/390 compatible software designed to support product applications, applications development, maintenance and special projects such as the Year 2000 initiatives for customers of all sizes.

The contract also allows Amdahl to offer an array of other services including Software Value Assessment services, Fiber Optic services for ESCON (Enterprise Systems CONnection) An IBM S/390 fiber-optic channel that transfers 17 Mbytes/sec over distances up to 60 km depending on connection type. ESCON allows peripheral devices to be located across large campuses and metropolitan areas. , and other Amdahl Customer Service capabilities to CDS data center and distributed environment customers. Amdahl provides a single point of accountability through a worldwide support organization offering communications, escalation, problem tracking, and logistics.
