Amdahl Announces Volume Shipments of Millennium 700 Series Servers; Amdahl Ship Record Number Of MIPS As Early Shipments for the World's Fastest S/390 CMOS Server.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 1998--Amdahl Corporation today announced the general availability of its Millennium(tm) 700 Series Servers, the world's fastest S/390 compatible CMOS Systems. On February 9, 1998, Amdahl announced the early availability of the 700 Series, its latest generation of CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) -based processors, with a uniprocessor speed of 80 MIPS (millions of instructions per second). A record number of 700 Series Millennium MIPS have been shipped, fueled by the high demand for ECL (emitter-coupled-logic) replacement.

The general availability of the Millennium 700 Series signals the beginning of volume shipments of the biggest and fastest S/390 CMOS systems on the market. The Millennium 700 Series is the industry's first S/390 CMOS processor ready to replace the largest ECL machines.

Southern Company, one of the world's largest independent power producers serving more than 12 million people, was among the first to install a Millennium 700 Series Server. "The Amdahl 7Z5 has provided excellent service without interruption from the first day install to present. Kredietbank Group is one of the largest banks in Belgium, with assets of approximately $120 billion (U.S.) and serves a range of markets throughout Europe. Early shipments of the 700 Series to customers in the Field Introduction Program (FIP) have resulted in successful installations at sites in Great Britain, France, Belgium, Germany, Canada, and the United States. Reports of improved and enhanced operations at these customer sites reflect the speed, capacity and reliability of the new generation of Millennium Servers.

Early installations at other customer locations in New York City, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Toronto have also yielded reports of satisfaction, with positive improvements in overall business operations and service to their customers. The new Millenniums have been installed for use in a variety of environments including Parallel Sysplex, DB2 data sharing, Year 2000 testing, and OLTP (on-line transaction processing). Due to the Millennium 700 performance exceeding all expectations, as well as the ease of installation and operations, half of the FIP customers have already ordered additional systems or have upgraded their current systems.
