Amdahl Announces Millennium 700 Series Servers, World's Fastest S/390 CMOS Systems Available.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 1998--

New Millennium 700 Series based on an 80-MIPS uniprocessor

(nearly 7 percent faster than originally announced) and up to

a 12-way configuration delivers 686 MIPS in a single footprint.

CMOS-based 700 Series has enhanced features -- Dynamic

QuickAvailability and expanded connectivity supporting double the

channels of any other comparable CMOS offering.

The new Millennium 500E model offers a 500 Series server in the

enhanced 700 Series package to meet future capacity needs within

the same footprint.

Amdahl Corporation today announced the early availability of its Millennium(TM) 700 Series Servers, the next milestone of its Millennium road map. The 700 Series is the latest generation of CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor)-based processors, with a uniprocessor speed of 80 MIPS (millions of instructions per second), nearly 7 percent faster than originally announced. These are the biggest and fastest S/390 CMOS systems available and can be ordered with up to 12 processors per system with a capacity of 686 MIPS. It is the industry's first S/390 CMOS processor ready to replace the largest ECL machines.

The 700 Series provides the enhanced feature Dynamic QuickCapacity(TM), the result of the Amdahl commitment to provide the highest-availability systems. Dynamic QuickCapacity allows cost-effective, incremental CMOS CPU upgrades for the first time with no down time. An authorized Amdahl representative can help customers upgrade in one- CPU increments, adding just the capacity they need by activating preconfigured CPUs.

Amdahl also announced the Millennium 500E models with a multi-generation package that can be upgraded to the newer, faster CPUs of the 700 Series by exchanging the system board, and related components. The Millennium 700 Series will then be easily upgraded to the 100+ MIPS CPUs of the next-generation 800 Series by replacing the CPU multichip modules. Customers can grow capacity within the same footprint, spanning processor generations and significantly reducing data center disruption because there is no need to disconnect and re-cable peripheral devices.

T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. will be acquiring the Millennium 700 Series Global Server to satisfy their computing needs. The Millennium 700 Series servers deliver the greatest S/390 CMOS capacity by minimizing multiprocessor overhead. The large Millennium caches and unique design provide the best multiprocessor (MP) factors in the industry. The 700 Series provides a range of models including the first S/390 CMOS 12-CPU configuration, delivering up to 686 MIPS.

The Millennium 700 Series also supports a maximum of 192 parallel channels and up to 512 total channels, twice the number of any other comparable CMOS offering. Supporting more channels is one of the ways the Millennium 700 Series improves flexibility for meeting changing requirements. For further configuration flexibility, the 700 Series accommodates up to 16 gigabytes of memory, and up to 15 MDF(TM) domains or logical partitions.
