Amdahl(R) Corporation today announced the availability of its Millennium(tm) 2000 Family of System/390-compatible CMOS processors. With more than 100 models -- the widest selection in the industry -- and the Multiple Server Feature(tm) (MSF), the Millennium 2000 Family meets customer demand for better fit to their applications and environments and greater flexibility for rapid growth and change.

The Millennium 2000 Family of future-ready servers is designed for today's volatile business climate of rapid-fire acquisitions, explosive growth in e-business, and competition from unexpected quarters. The capacity granularity of the Millennium 2000 Family helps customers take charge of change, allowing them more control and manageability of their complex. "Many Amdahl customers put high priority on granularity -- that is, more models in smaller-capacity increments, with an extended upgrade path. The Millennium 2000 Family includes: the 2000A Series, available now; the 2000C Series, available fourth quarter 1999; and the 2000E Series, available first quarter 2000. The top-of-the-line 2000E Series server offers up to 2000 MIPS, which will make it the industry's highest-capacity S/390-compatible CMOS server.

Millennium 2000 features more flexibility for non-disruptive

upgrades

Each series within the Millennium 2000 Family features enhanced capabilities for rapid-response, non-disruptive upgrade of processors and channels. These features allow data centers more flexibility and agility for responding to fast-changing business conditions.

In addition to upgrading capacity on Millennium servers by activating pre-installed processors dynamically, customers can now dynamically upgrade memory on selected 2000 Family servers. Most firmware upgrades for new features can also be accomplished dynamically. These features are the latest in a long list of Amdahl exclusive features.

Millennium 2000 upgrade granularity makes MSF even more powerful

The Millennium 2000 Family carries forward all the flexibility advantages of previous Millennium generations, such as the Multiple Server Feature. MSF creates discrete servers with unique serial numbers in a single footprint and lowers customers' total cost of ownership by providing the ideal solution for S/390 workload consolidation. Operating and maintenance costs can be dramatically reduced by replacing multiple, expensive-to-maintain ECL mainframes or consolidating small CMOS servers with one compact, low-maintenance CMOS footprint that consumes much less power.
